Bitter Loss to Swallow

Hall 11 5 – 2 Hall 15

Our Hall soccer team humbled by dark horses Hall 11 in a scrappy game of football played out on a field unfit for even walking let alone a decent game of football.

It was impossible to play our speedy brand on football in such conditions, but credit must go to Hall 11 for taking full advantage of it.

Hall 11 went ahead early on when they managed to stab home a loose ball after we struggled to clear our lines. They then took a shock two goal lead when they sent a freekick straight into goal. The freekick, along with many other decisions by the referee threatened to make the game an unpleasant affair, but thankfully, clearer heads prevailed.

We then pulled a goal back before halftime, thanks to a penalty placed to the corner by team captain Andy.

When the second half resumed, Hall 11 assumed a defensive stance. While we were pouring everything forward in search of the equalizer, they broke on counter attacks. One such counter attack resulted in a controversial decision, which most probably killed our chances of coming back. The attack resulted in a mad scramble in front of our goal, and when the mud had settled, Hall 11 were running off celebrating their goal. The ball didn’t appear to have crossed the line, and the linesman was unsure. However, the referee decided to call it, and gave us an uphill task to overcome.

The introduction of Alvin seemed to bring life to the wings, and he scored on one of those runs down the wing. The finish was superb as the ball went in off the far post from an acute angle.

Sadly, the faint glimmer of hope was dashed out once again as Hall 11 again scored from a set piece, this time a corner. They then dealt the finishing blow with a penalty just before the stroke of full time.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the team, especially team captain Andy, as emotions overflowed after the final whistle. Although we failed to attain our goals, it is best to take the positives out of the experience, and build on that for a better campaign in the future.

Squash Out

The Squash Team played their Quarterfinals game against Hall 2 at the SRC Squash Court yesterday. It was a match they battled hard but still fell against their stronger opponent as they lost all sets against Hall 2.

The first game played by Alvin was played with passion and vigor though we lost as his opponent was stronger.

The second game was played by Shu Ting who also played with energy but could not get pass her stronger opponent.

The third game played by Warrick was also played with gusto but he also could not get pass his stronger opponent.

Although we lost the match after the third game, our star players Shu Ting and Qiu Hong continued to play their best in their game but they too could not get past their opponents.

Kudos! To our Squash Team for showing their sportsmanship and the wonderful play they have presented since the start of the game and surpassing the results of last year by reaching the quarterfinals.

Let’s do it again next time!

Wow Wow Wow!

Our tennis team will now advance to the Semi Finals after winning Hall 16 3-2. The team has done our Hall proud by being the first Sport Team to make it to the Semi Finals.

Excellent reflexes by Warrick allowed him to win the first set rather easily. It was apparent that the opponent was not good enough to challenge and return Warrick’s strokes. Clarice was up next for the female’s singles. Her accurate and strong swing of the racquet made winning seem so easy! Two sets up and all we needed was just another win from the mixed double, men double or women double. Wood and Raymond represented our Hall in the mixed doubles. Although we made several serving mistakes but fortunately our opponents incurred more errors than us. Raymond’s patience and Wood’s determination to do things ‘step by step’ brought us closer to winning the Champion Cup and booked us a place in the Semi Finals!

Well done guys and I would like to wish the whole team luck in their upcoming match! I would definitely like to see you guys playing in the Finals and hopefully supporters can go down, cheer and spice up the atmosphere!

Wrong Call by Ref and Softball Girls Eliminated

The heavy downpour and continuous rain caused the pitch to be in a horrendous state! However, this did not affect out players at all. Spirit was as high as ever and everybody just can’t wait for the game to start!

We did well in the first inning, and almost managed to achieve a homerun. The second inning was not so well done but neither did our opponent, Hall 8, got any homeruns. The last inning was the crucial game for both sides and the situation was quite tense. Adrenaline level shot high as our opponents began to fill all three bases. Our opponent managed to bet a ball, pitched by Hong Wei but it was in-field fly and the better was supposed to be out. BUT because the referee did not call out for it and the opponent managed to run back to the home base, the won 1-0.

Alvin, Bala, Qing Wei and Jeffrey tried to rectify the whole situation with the convening Hall. However, in a game, we should always respect the referee’s decision; whether it is professional or not. An appeal was brought up at the joint hall level but was rejected. Alvin and Bala respected the Joint Hall Sports Secretaries decision and this chapter comes to a close.

The Makings of a Champion

The table tennis team started off with a bang on the first playoffs today at the SRC. Despite the wet weather, the team’s spirit was not dampened at all. They beat halls 5 and 8 in just a day to go straight through to the quarter finals on the 10th of January.

The line up against hall 5 proved to be a formidable one. Siong Jer played male singles and managed to beat the opponent in a straight 3-0. Wood play the female singles and won expectedly 3-0 against a relatively inexperienced opponent. Qing Wei and Adrian played male doubles, and were very close to winning the opponent a couple of times, but eventually marginally to a stronger opponent. Chencni and Wanling were up next for female doubles. On-looking supporters of Hall 15 were keen on them winning the match. For their win meant game over for the opponent. Likewise, the opponents were pressurized to win this crucial game. It was a hard fight, with multiple deuces in just a game alone, but the game belonged to us. Chencni and Wanling controlled the game with their calmness to win 3-2. However, we were not given much time to celebrate our victory over hall 5, for we had to play hall 8, which looked much stronger than hall 5.

The players were rested for about 15 minutes before the game started. Siong Jer played male singles again, and won 3-1. His opponent was fierce with his strokes, but eventually, he was tamed by our player. While Siong Jer got the first victory for hall 15 against hall 8, the female doubles played a quiet game on another court. Once again, Chencni and Wanling played an excellent game. They were calmer this time round, and swept a 3-0 victory. Peifen played female singles. Like Wood in the previous game against hall 5, she was expected to win against the relatively inexperienced opponent. She lived up to the expectations with a dashing 3-0 victory. Kenneth and Zhi rong took to the table after the female doubles, and begin a tough battle against the opponents. They were obviously stronger, but our guys did not give them a good time winning either. The opponents were caught surprised many a times though we lost 3-0 for this game.

Overall, we won both hall 5 and 8 with a score of 3-1, and qualify straight for the quarter finals. Way to go guys! You all have the makings of a champion!

Hall 3 Denies us of another Win

Facing our strong opponent Hall 3, consisting of 4 IVP players, our hall players were at a disadvantage right from the start of the game. Moreover, accompanied by the heavy rain, our players did not perform as well as expected. But nevertheless, they did not give up and put up a tough fight against Hall 3.

Our hockey captain, Senthil, was satisfied with the team’s performance even though they lost the game. During the first half of the game, our opponent put up a fierce attacking strategy that our players tried their best to counter, but failed resulting in a score of 2-0 at the end of the first half. During the second half, our players were more aware of their opponent’s attacking strategy and adopted a more aggressive defence tactic, which did not allow our opponent to put in a single goal.

Hence, the game ended with a final score of 2-0. Last but not least, it was a great game for our guys and we definitely grew stronger.

Luck Just Wasn't on Our Side

Our hockey girls braved the rain and played their first match against Hall 6 at the NIE Hockey Pitch at 10am this morning.

Our defenders worked real hard, with Stephanie and Sherry sweeping many balls out of the D. Hall 6 had numerous opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. That was because our goalkeeper, Hui Yin, was simply too good for them. Supporters who went down would have seen the agony in our opponents’ faces, as they were not able to beat our mighty keeper.

Sylvia and Amanda, our hardworking wingers, were running up and down the flanks trying to regain possession. Sylvia's skills plus her stamina earned her the captaincy and she led the team fairly well.

However, towards the end of the first half, there was some sort of chaos at the goal post and the next thing we knew was that our opponent scored a goal. Luck just wasn’t on our side and the game ended with Hall 6 winning 1-0.

Basketball Boys Bow Out

1st Quarter: 7 – 8
2nd Quarter: 14 – 10
3rd Quarter: 18 – 19
4th Quarter: 22 – 23

It was a disappointing day as our Hall team was kicked out of the basketball tournament in what turned out to be an exact reproduction of their first game in the tournament.

Playing Hall 7, wearing bibs again, in the outdoor courts, everything was the same except for the final score.

A thoroughly nail-biting game, the game was marked by great offensive and defensive plays. We were unlucky as Lady Luck seemed to be helping Hall 7’s shots into the net while ours just refused to go in.

The game played down, right to the wire, but we were unable to get that deciding shot in. We should applaud a valiant effort by our Hall and hope for a better showing next HO.

Victory!

Our netball girls took on Hall 9 in their opening match. It started drizzling no more than 10 minutes into the game. The unfavourable weather conditions however, have not dampened the spirits of the girls. The standard of both teams seem to be on par at the beginning. Defence was tight on both sides and there were very few attempted goals for both sides. Nevertheless, it was a good start for us as we were in the lead by a slight margin, with the score standing at 2-1 during the 1st quarter of the match. Not willing to be defeated, our opponent played harder and were more focused than they were during the 1st quarter. However, they still proved to be no match to our girls.

Our center, huifang was in good control of the game as she manoeuvred the ball with ease, passing it on to her team mates. We had no doubts about Yiting’s(the GA) accuracy in shooting. She scored so many goals that we seriously lost track of the exact number she scored. Sarah, the team’s GK, was a threat to the opponents with her formidable height and quick reflexes. She blocked off quite a number of attempted shots, leaving the girls of hall 9 rather exasperated.

It could be observed that the energy level of our opponent was declining as we were approaching the end of the game. We could smell victory in the air as Sabrina and Yiting widened the margin between both teams with a few more goals in the last quarter of the game. Our team won with an impressive score of 4 – 12! Good job girls! You girls can really play a mean game of netball!

It was indeed a good beginning for our netball girls. Watch out for our netball girls at their upcoming match on 30th December. All the best!

Hall 3 Too Strong for us

Today's softball girl's match was a real tough one against one of the stronger halls, Hall 3.

Softball coach, Qing Wei and IC, Samantha, had expected the results even before the match started and before the match, they told the team to 'enjoy the game and just gain more exposure and experience'.

Our opponents were simply too strong for our inexperience team and having tried their best, the team inevitably lost 14-0 to Hall 3. However, they have had done well today. You guys can expect them to win the next match and i believe quarter finals should not be a problem for our softball girls.

Lost Expected; but our boys Surpassed Expectations

Hall 6 2 – 1 Hall 15

The past few days of stop start rain presented a chopped up field for the players to battle on. The conditions were a blessing in disguise as although our Hall couldn’t effectively play the tactics they set out to play, it also didn’t help Hall 6 play the way they were expected to.

On paper, everyone expected a win for Hall 6, and we started off defensively, trying to play for a draw. However, we exceeded our expectations when early in the game Qing Wei scored giving us a shock lead. The goal was helped by the bad pitch conditions, which was basically the main factor in the entire game. Mistakes were made, the ball made unexpected stops and bounces, it was quickly turning out into a matter of who would be the luckier team on the day.

Hall 6 caught their break not long after, as they finally managed to erase our lead. A poor goal kick was intercepted by Hall 6, and the mud created problems for our defence in clearing the ball. Hall 6 capitalized and finished venomously.

Our inability to get the ball out of the danger area quick enough was punished as Hall 6 managed to score the winner later on. But we should applaud the finish as their scorer swung a sweet volley straight into the net.

Now it all lies in the 3rd game to decide the fate of our Hall’s soccer team. Good luck boys!

Badminton Team Hard Done by Opponent

In a hot and tightly contested affair, our IH badminton team battled hard but eventually lost to Hall 5 and hence, was not able to qualify for the quarter finals. From the start, we clearly did not underestimate our opponents and in the men’s singles, Cheng Loo gave his all but as the match progressed near the end, it was obvious that fatigue was setting in and he eventually lost the match 2-1. Things got worst in the next match when the pairing of Kuan Kee and Karine lost 2-0 in the mixed doubles. However, there was a glimmer of hope when our men’s doubles, consisting of Jeremy and Joshua came back from a set down to win 2-1.

It started to liven up in the female’s doubles as this was the deciding match for both halls and we knew we had to win it to stand any hope of getting into the quarters. The pairing of Joanne (lady on the right in the picture) and Jin Jing (lady on the left in picture) took to the court and although they lost the first set, they fought back hard to clinch the second set. At this point of time, we sensed that we could win it and supporters could be seen cheering for both teams as the third set got underway. As the game progressed, we started to trail and at one point of time, we were down 20-14. Still, the girls did not give up and came back to narrow the score to 20-19. Sadly, we couldn’t hold our nerves and in the end, our opponents managed to get the match winning point. This meant that our hall was knocked out of the preliminaries and even though Shu Ting managed to win her match in the female’s singles, it was all but too late.

Even though the team did not make it to the quarters, their battling display was there for everyone to see and we are proud of their team for their never say die spirit although we were trailing at some point of times. It was a good effort put in by the team and the experience gained would indeed be valuable for the next IH. Good job guys and continue to do so!

Mikel’s Penalty Saves the Day

It was drizzling when the game commenced. Hall 15 started off quite well as we were always in our opponent’s half attacking. We came closing to scoring on numerous occasions, with Bala missing one of our best opportunities. Our defence is solid – Nike, Aaron and Mikel did not even allow our opponents to threaten our keeper at all!

It was supposed to be a relatively easy game for us and yet none of our hockey guys managed to fire a shot into the goal in the first half. Both the players and the supporters were on their nerves during half time. Nonetheless, our players and supporters once again portrayed the ‘never say die’ spirit! Our guys were never dishearten by their misses and persevered throughout the whole match. It was approximately 5 minutes from time when the referee awarded Hall 15 a penalty! A glimmer of hope for us! Mikel stood forth and took the penalty steadily and confidently. Mikel’s accuracy had never been doubted and he did not let us down! Final whistle was blown and Hall 15 won 1-0 against Hall 14!

The first game played by both Sports Secretary of Hall 15 and Hall 7 was played with passion, vigor and some laughter though we lost as they were the stronger opponent.

The third game was won by Warrick who also played with vigor although his opponent stretched his ankle; they still continued to play after stopping for a while.

Star players Shu Ting and Qiu Hong continued their winning ways for Hall 15 by winning the second and last game of the match respectively although it was a hard fought game for Shu Ting as she had to battle her way through 3 sets.

Yet another victory for softball guys!

Against Hall 10, Hall 15 won yet another splendid game of softball with a score of 16 :5 After consecutive days of pouring rain, the field condition was not looking good. Players had to play in ankle deep mud, hindering optimal performance. The field condition was a challenge especially for pitcher Alvin as he had to make do with handling slimy balls. It was a case of inevitability that accuracy had to be compromised. The game throughout was a good one with the players ever ready to go on the field.

A learning point for our players today would be the importance of players both on and off the field in supporting each other. This comes in terms of taking the initiative in helping clean the ball, as well as not throwing the bat into the mud when it could be handed over to the next batter. Also (as mentioned after the game), instructions should be followed to lessen the number of unnecessary strikeouts.
Overall a great game, looking at today’s performance; the finals could be a possibility for Hall 15. Way to go guys!

Rough Match for our Basketball Girls

Picture shows our player-coach, Chen Cni (in white).

Our basketball girls team took on their second match today against Hall 11. Due to the rain, the match was shifted to the indoor basketball courts at NIE.

In the first quarter of the game, the strength of both teams were on par. The pace of the game quickens in the second and third quarter with Hall 11 leading. In the last quarter, Hall 11 changed tactic and became more defensive. The match ended with Hall 11 winning 19-9.

There are things worth mentioning though - our girls did play well and showed good team work and Wan Choo, our star player, managed to irritate our opponents and thus resulting in them commiting numerous fouls. However, Wan Choo was injured towards the end of the match and had to be substituted out!

In all, well done girls!

Almost the Shocker

Game 2 in the men’s basketball tournament saw our hall team being humbled by hot favourites Hall 2. Our boys started with a bang, taking a surprise lead which caused Hall 2 to think twice if they thought that we would go down quietly.

Our start to the game attracted interest from people from the other courts as everyone was hoping that the underdogs could force an upset that would live in history. The first quarter ended 7 – 7.

Alas, that was all the heroics our team could muster. The brilliant start to the game by our boys resulted in Hall 2 turning on the tempo with slick moves up and down the court. Their fitness and atlethicism were amazing and it was no shame going down to such a tight outfit.

The game ended 51 – 14 to Hall 2. However it is not the end of the road for our team as they need a win in the next game to progress.

Badminton Team Lost in their Opening Match

Our team took on Hall 2 in the IH badminton first round and despite putting in a brave effort, we could not live up to the pressure and eventually lost 4-1 overall. Our hall got off to a good start in the men’s singles when Cheng Loo came back from one set down to clinch the match 2-1. However, we could not build on the lead and in the female’s singles, Shu Ting lost 2-0 in straight sets to her opponent to bring the overall score to 1-1. In the men’s doubles, the pairing of Joshua and Jeremy lost 2-0 yet again even though they were so close to taking the second set several times but just could not find a way through their opponent who finally got the match winning point and our hall was now trailing 2-1 overall. Thus, this meant that we had to win the next match in the female’s doubles to stand any chances of winning Hall 2 but the pairing of Joanne and Jin Jing were not able to overcome their opponent and in the end, they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat. Hence, it effectively meant that we had lost to Hall 2 and the last match which was the mixed doubles was redundant. Nevertheless, there was still pride to play for and the team of Karine (female in picture) and Kuan Kee fought hard but eventually lost 2-0 to their more stronger opponents.

Although the team was not as good as their opponents, they were undeterred and determined not to let their opponents get away with the game easily. They put in a great fight till the end and even though they were beaten, there was still something to cheer about from the never say die spirit and not forgetting the supporters who went there to cheer for the team and raised their morale. It was a credible performance by the team and well done to them who hopefully will be going into the next match with greater confident. Keep up the good job and the spirit!

Merely an Extra Training Session for our Soccer Guys

Sepak Takaw – The team consisted mainly of our Soccer guys. They had never had any training for Takraw before this.

It was 830 in the morning and we decided that it was slightly too early for the match (which starts at 9am), hence, the whole team went Canteen 2 for breakfast. Well after all, it was important for our players to fill their stomach before the game begins!

The game started at 915am, with Andy, Kang Chiat and Richard representing our Hall for the first set. Andy’s kicks were remarkable! He helped to clinch as many as 5 points for our Hall with his trademark volleys. Richard’s heading of the ball, assisted by Kang Chiat’s kicks, was so impressive that it won claps from the crowd!

Elvin, Dao Hao and Chang Yue played in the second set. Elvin dominated in the whole game. However, fantastic kicks by Elvin (man in picture) weren’t enough to win the game for us. Admittedly, we made numerous serving errors in this game.

The third set was the best of all! It was electrifying right till the end of the match. Alvin’s kicks were flawless. The ball spin slightly over the net, and our opponents (Hall 1) had to make a few dives to return the ball. Victor almost forgot that he was playing Takraw instead of soccer, returning the ball under the net. But Victor peaked towards the end of the game, pulling a few points back for Hall 15.

All in all, it was merely an extra training session for our guys. But our guys did not pass this ‘training session’ of theirs, as we lost all 3 sets to Hall 1. But looking at how well our players played today, I strongly believe that we will be able to win in our next match next Saturday.

Hall 15 vs Hall 16

Alas! Our volleyball guys were defeated in this tight match – but not without giving our opponents a rough time. We started off well but a few consecutive points turned the match in their favour and Hall 16 closed the first set by a small margin of 23-25.

Not to be daunted, our guys fought back with a splendid 25-17 at the end of the second set. Their well-timed coordination and effective blows neatly put our opponents back to their rightful place.

Tension mounted with each dive and smack as we approached the end of the final set. Supporters from each team kept the suspense high with their loud encouragements. The players’ eyes were keen on the ball. The lead volleyed between the two teams and everyone looked on with bated breath as the match reached a deuce. Finally, with a final hit, we lost 25-27.

Nevertheless, it was a good fight and we played on until the very end. Keep up the spirit!

These are the remaining fixtures. Unfortunately, despite the valiant efforts of our volleyball guys & girls team, they were knocked out early in the tournament after accumulating 2 losses for each team. Same goes for our waterpolo team.

For this Interhall Games, the fixture format is winner-loser bracket style. 2 wins would qualify a team straight to quarters, whilst 2 losses would immediately knock a team out.

Thank u Hall 15 for the spirit shown so far and do keep it up! Supporters are warmly welcomed and your presence would make a difference!

1st quarter: 7 – 3
2nd quarter: 9 – 11
3rd quarter: 16 – 14
4th quarter: 21 – 19 (Final score)

Hall 15 emerged victorious in a closely fought battle with Hall 7. Be pumped for more action from our softball guys!

Not to be outdone by the girls, the guys’ softball team won Hall11 by such a large margin, none of the players from Hall 15 kept count! (To be modest, let’s put the win at 4-1 although sentiments varied in that some suggest we must have scored between 9-11 homeruns.) Alvin pitched the ball almost flawlessly, arousing cheers of “good pitch!” from gratified teammates and frustrating opponents who were passively hoping for a bad throw. Our players played the game calmly and rationally, quickly effecting wise moves that sent us home arunning. The game was wholly enjoyable to watch, and after ending it affably, the two teams enthusiastically indulged in another round of friendlies.

In return, we gave up our girls doubles to the opponent due to missing players on our side.. This added up to an overall 3:1 win for hall 15.

The captain of the team Warrick made his game a fast one with his fantastic win of 6 :0. He certainly made it look easy and soon the opponent was humbled by his swift strokes. For the mix doubles, Wood and “gong fu” Raymond beat the opponent hands down with similar results as the former. Their opponent were relentless but in the end triumph smiled for Hall 15. The men's doubles were just as exciting. It was clear that the hard work they had put in paid off to bring Hall 15 glorious victory!

Armed with a competent pitcher/captain and a team of polished players, Hall 15 was destined to win from the start. Our girls put up a mean fight, and maintained a constant lead throughout the game. Threatened by our impending win, Hall 8 resorted to futile taunts for our players to “swing the bat!” Undaunted and indifferent, the focused batters held on to their bats, swinging the bat only when their professional judgment deems it necessary.

The glorious moment came when Karine secured the much-anticipated win. Karine, Jasmine and Wood were lauded by the usually critical coach as the players of the match. After the game, the coach revised the players’ misses, and the girls are set on honing their skills to top form through more rounds of intense training. Chances of winning for these determined girls look promising, and hopefully this is first of the many victories to watch!

Beautiful Disaster against Hall 7 Waterpolo Team

Our Hall's Waterpolo Team faced a tough opponent in its opening match. Our opponent, Hall 7, was last year's runner up! And according to various sources, their team consist of 2 to 3 IVP players and 1 National Team player.

On our side, we managed to find enthusiastic guys who were willing to try out this sport for the very first time. Siyang, the goalkeeper for the first half, had no prior experience but managed to block out a few shots. Jun Wen, our star player scored the only goal for Hall 15 from close range a few minutes after the start of the match.

We played a better game in the second half, with Jeffrey saving a few shots, Jing Yang, Derren (wearing the blue cap in the photo above) and Daniel trying their very best to regain possession, Bala and Zhong Ming attempting a few shots from far and not forgetting Alvin, who played a major role in motivating our team against our mighty opponent.

However, our amateur team were not able to overcome the stronger opponent.

Calling out to all guys: If you are available this Saturday (16 Dec) from 9am to 10am, please represent our Hall for Waterpolo (contact Bala for more information: 91093568).
Participation is more important than winning. Hope to hear from you!
